Decorative Art
is a rare art form. Apparently submissive and servile, it is
seen as an appendage to the existing architectural and spatial
conditions. "Commissioned work! Folklore! Handicraft!",
cry pictorial colleagues. The critic is of the opinion that there
is nothing worthy of criticism. The architect goes so far as to
"buy in artistic manpower".
The decorative artist, on the other hand, simply paints without
the slightest idea what this is all about.
The remarkable thing is, while all this might mirror the general
understanding of art, what other art form can change the architecture,
the space, the atmosphere and thus the consciousness so much as
decorative art? I have no inclination to make the link, so beloved
of my colleagues, from cave painting to the Egyptians to Michelangelo.
I find it trite to use this to show that decorative art is the
mother of all coloured art in the brush-pots of the painter's
guild.
This art form was displaced for only a few years. Decorative
Art has made a comeback in the contemporary consciousness - and
that, indeed, is exactly why you clicked on this page.
Die Dekorationsmalerei
 ist eine
seltsame Kunstrichtung. Scheinbar unterwürfig und devot fügt
sie sich den Gegebenheiten der Architektur und des Raumes an. Auftragsarbeit!
Folklore! Kunsthandwerk! schreit der Kollege aus der Fachrichtung
der "E-Kunst". Der Kritiker findet, es gäbe nicht einmal ein
Objekt der Kritik. Der Architekt gar "kauft künstlerische manpower".
Der Dekorationsmaler aber malt einfach. Und ist ratlos.
Denn merkwürdig: All das mag ja in dem Kunstbegriff enthalten
sein. Aber welche Kunstform kann den Raum, die Architektur, das
Lebensgefühl und somit natürlich das Bewußtsein
so verändern und beeinflussen wie die Dekorationsmalerei! Ich
habe hier keine Laune, die von meinen Kollegen geschlagenen Bögen
von der Höhlenmalerei über die Ägypter zu Michelangelo
zu schlagen. Ich finde es abgedroschen, Ihnen aufzuzeigen, daß
die Dekorationsmalerei die Mutter aller Farbkunst in den Pinselschlachten
der Malerzunft ist.
Diese Kunstform war nur für wenige Jahre verdrängt. Die
Dekorationsmalerei ist in das Bewußtsein der Zeit zurückgekehrt.
